We just returned from just over a week on the northern portion of the LP of Michigan.  Here is some of what is going on around the Midwest - we will catch up on other news in coming days.  Remember if your passion is deer hunting to visit us at Midwest Deer Hunting, or if your interests are more specifically in Missouri, visit Missouri Outdoors. North Dakota News

The ND Game and Fish Department has set the small game regulations for 2013 with few changes.

Notably, prairies chickens and sage grouse seasons will be closed again due to low numbers.

Residents only will be able to hunt waterfowl between Sept 21 and 27.  Beginning the 28th, nonresidents will be allowed to hunt waterfowl in ND.  Further waterfowl regs will be finalized about mid-August.

Between Oct. 12 and 18, residents only will have access to ND Game and fish lands as well as PLOTS (Private Land Open to Sportsmen) land.

In other ND outdoor news, Game and Fish reports a record number of walleye fingerlings stocked statewide (11 million).  This is due to excellent conditions at fish hatcheries in ND.  Excellent fishing is reported statewide.

Upcoming events include a BOW (Becoming an Outdoors Woman) workshop August 9-11, Fall crow season opener August 10, and early goose season opener August 15th.  Again for details, regs, and license info visit gf.nd.gov.

USFWS News

Officials with USFWS announced grants totalling $700,000 as part of the Joint Venture Habitat Restoration and Protection program.  The mission of the program is "to target the most significant environmental problems in the Great Lakes region."

Various organizations receive the grants - this year 3 were headed to Michigan and one to Pennsylvania.  Wetland restoration in the Manistee, MI region (Ducks Unlimited), Kirtland Warbler habitat enhancement in northern Michigan (Huron Pines RC+D), endangered bird restoration in the River Raisin watershed in Michigan (Stewardship Network), and a similar program in Erie Cty, PA (Western Pennsylvania Conservancy) are the efforts being supported with the money.

The USFWS also announced that The Plains and Prairie Potholes had unveiled its new website at http://plainsandprairiepotholeslcc.org/.  This group "facilitates dialogue among federal, state, non-governmental, academic and private interests to build a collaborative network of knowledge surrounding natural resources challenges impacting the prairie pothole region and northern Great Plains."

Iowa News
Iowa is in the midst of its 15 day pheasant survey - commencing on the 1st of August.  Counts are expected to decline - according to the Iowa DNR, in similar years populations have declined between 4% and 51%.  When the count is complete, results will be available at http://www.iowadnr.gov/pheasantsurvey - expect this in mid-Spetember.

Weekly Fishing Report Michigan Department of Natural Resources June 21, 2012

Lake trout (Photo credit: Wikipedia) New lake trout and splake regulations went into effect on June 14, 2012. The new regulations affect certain ports on Lake Huron. The daily possession limit is three (3) lake trout or splake and the minimum size limit is 15 inches. The possession season is from May 1 through September 30.  Click here  for additional information.  SOUTHEAST LOWER PENINSULA Lake Erie:  Walleye fishing remains steady in Ohio waters, east of Sputnik. Limits are possible in Michigan waters however they are not coming easy. The better spots in Michigan were 21 to 25 feet of water in Brest Bay, off Stony Point and along the Michigan-Ohio line. Buoys 1 and 2 off the River Raisin channel were also producing walleye. A few boats did well for perch in 22 feet of water off Fermi.
