POLK CITY - The Drake Sportsmen’s Club is hosting its inaugural youth shoot and education day for 20 youths age 12 and older on April 14, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Charles ‘Butch’ Olofson Shooting Range, near Polk City. The youth shoot and education day will teach kids firearm safety from licensed instructors and college shooters and allow them to fire shotguns, .22 rifles, BB guns, and bow and arrows. Parents or guardians are required to fill out a release of liability waiver prior to the event. Image via Wikipedia Wildlife, shooting, civic and fraternal organizations are encouraged to submit an application for the Encouraging Tomorrow’s Hunters program, a grant program developed to assist in recruitment of the next generation of hunters and shooters. Grant funds will help cover event expenses, including promotional printing; event memorabilia such as shirts, caps or vests; ammunition and targets, and eye and ear protection. Past funding has enabled several groups to conduct youth pheasant and waterfowl hunts, while others have sponsored trap and other shooting events, including archery and rifle shooting. Any club or organization interested in conducting a youth hunting or shooting event can get more information, including a grant application, from North Dakota Game and Fish Department outreach biologist Pat Lothspeich at (701) 328-6332 . Kicking things off on Aug. 26 from 7-8 p.m. will be a tracking program with Bryan Ridgway and a canine partner of the Marion Police Department. Visitors can camp overnight, or return on Saturday for the remainder of the sessions. Camping fees apply. All children must be with a responsible adult.
