With high water levels in many of the river systems, boat and shore anglers need to use caution. Anglers are reminded that walleye, pike and muskie seasons on the Upper Peninsula Great Lakes, inland waters and the St. Mary’s River as well as the Lower Peninsula inland waters will close on March 15 at midnight. SOUTHEAST LOWER PENINSULA Lake Erie:  Rumor has it a few walleye were caught in Brest Bay. Perch were caught off the docks in the Metro Park Marina. Huron River:  Is producing steelhead between the dam and the mouth. Anglers are using small hair jigs or spawn. A couple walleye were also caught. Detroit River:  Anglers need to be careful and watch for ice flows. Boat anglers were catching perch up near Gibraltar and off South Gibraltar Road. Most are using perch rigs with minnows or a piece of crawler. Lake St. Clair:  Ice fishing here is done. Nearly all the ice is gone and ice along the shoreline is no longer safe. Three Michigan young people were introduced to the Natural Resources Commission as Outstanding Outdoor Kids at the regular monthly NRC meeting Thursday, June 14, in Lansing. Lexi Loehfelm, 11, Noah Ekdom, 12, and Jimmy McGrath, 15, were named in January as winners in the Outstanding Outdoor Kids program, which recognizes the efforts of youth who have gone above and beyond to protect, preserve and promote green space in Michigan. Lexi is a member of Goodwillie Environmental School in Ada, where she leads other students on environmental adventures. Noah, from Roscommon, is a second class Boy Scout who has been involved in a trail clean-up, Adopt-a-Highway and creating a new trail on the Marguerite Gahagan Nature Preserve. Jimmy, from Monroe, started an organization to clean up and restore Sterling State Park . Rick Snyder today declared a state of disaster in the Upper Peninsula counties of Luce and Schoolcraft to make available all state resources to protect public health and safety in ongoing efforts to fight the wildfires already engulfing more than 20,000 acres. The declaration also may permit authorities to evacuate, and establishes a fireworks ban in the two affected counties and an outdoor burning ban in 49 counties. Snyder also issued  Executive Order 2012-8  activating the National Guard to provide assistance. The  declaration , outlined in a proclamation, was requested by the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD).
