Michigan: Snowshoe, cross-country ski and more at 'Just Add Snow' programs this February

Just Add Snow iconThe Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will host snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, dog sledding and more winter-themed events at nine DNR visitor centers across the state in February. In most cases, equipment is available to borrow if participants don't have their own. There is no charge for these "Just Add Snow" programs, but a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to state parks. 
More than 60 “Just Add Snow” programs are offered at the following locations. Click on the "Just Add Snow" icon at the left to see a 30-second video. 
  • Bay City Recreation Area: Saginaw Bay Visitor Center (Bay City)
  • Hartwick Pines State Park Visitor Center (Grayling)
  • Hoffmaster State Park: Gillette Visitor Center (Muskegon)
  • Ludington State Park (Ludington)
  • Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Visitor Center (Ontonogan)
  • Tahquamenon Falls State Park (Paradise)
  • Waterloo Recreation Area (Chelsea)
  • William Mitchell State Park: Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center (Cadillac)
  • Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center (Mattawan)
“We’ve had a good snowfall this year and conditions are perfect for getting outdoors and enjoying the beauty of winter,” said Kevin Frailey, who oversees programs at the DNR visitor centers. “It doesn’t cost much. Most programs are free, the instruction is free and, in most cases, loaner equipment is available for those who don’t have their own. The only thing you need to pay for is a Recreation Passport if you don’t have one yet.”

Lake trout (Photo credit: Wikipedia) New lake trout and splake regulations went into effect on June 14, 2012. The new regulations affect certain ports on Lake Huron. The daily possession limit is three (3) lake trout or splake and the minimum size limit is 15 inches. The possession season is from May 1 through September 30.  Click here  for additional information.  SOUTHEAST LOWER PENINSULA Lake Erie:  Walleye fishing remains steady in Ohio waters, east of Sputnik. Limits are possible in Michigan waters however they are not coming easy. The better spots in Michigan were 21 to 25 feet of water in Brest Bay, off Stony Point and along the Michigan-Ohio line. Buoys 1 and 2 off the River Raisin channel were also producing walleye. A few boats did well for perch in 22 feet of water off Fermi.
