Youth can apply now for DNR MinnAqua fly-fishing weekend May 3-5

Minnesota youth age 11 to 17 need to apply by March 1 to take part in a special adult mentored fly-fishing weekend near Spring Valley, Minn., May 3-5.
Twenty youth and their guardians will team up with experienced fly-fishing mentors to learn the basics of fly fishing and fish for trout together.
Participants will also try their hand at tying flies, learn methods for safely cleaning and cooking fish, and discover how anglers catch more fish when they understand fish habits and habitat. There will also be time for fish tales and a campfire.
The youth and guardian should have an interest in fly fishing, but little or no experience.
The event is sponsored by MinnAqua, a statewide educational program through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), designed to connect youth and families to Minnesota’s waters through fishing.
The fly-fishing weekend will be held at Good Earth Village. Activities begin after check-in Friday evening and wrap up by 2 p.m. on Sunday. Lodging is bunk-style in the Hilltop Cabins, with meals provided in nearby Barr Lodge. A fly-fishing rod, reel and basic tackle will be provided for each participant.
The cost is $120 per youth/adult pair and includes meals, lodging, guiding services, equipment and additional materials.
This event is limited to 20 youth/adult pairs. Registration for each youth/adult pair is by application and requires youth to submit an original essay.

Weekly Fishing Report Michigan Department of Natural Resources June 21, 2012

Lake trout (Photo credit: Wikipedia) New lake trout and splake regulations went into effect on June 14, 2012. The new regulations affect certain ports on Lake Huron. The daily possession limit is three (3) lake trout or splake and the minimum size limit is 15 inches. The possession season is from May 1 through September 30.  Click here  for additional information.  SOUTHEAST LOWER PENINSULA Lake Erie:  Walleye fishing remains steady in Ohio waters, east of Sputnik. Limits are possible in Michigan waters however they are not coming easy. The better spots in Michigan were 21 to 25 feet of water in Brest Bay, off Stony Point and along the Michigan-Ohio line. Buoys 1 and 2 off the River Raisin channel were also producing walleye. A few boats did well for perch in 22 feet of water off Fermi.
