We typically design our trips around a two-week timeframe. Rather than hopping from hotel to hotel (or condo to condo) every few nights, we prefer setting up a single base of operations.

Staying in one spot allows you to truly immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, geography, and community. To make this work, we look for properties that are:

• Equipped with a Great Kitchen: Dining out three times a day can easily add 25% to 50% to your total travel budget. Preparing breakfast, packing trail lunches, or cooking a fresh local dinner at home keeps costs manageable so you can stretch your travel dollars further.

2. Book Early—Up to a Year in Advance

Our biggest secret to securing premium stays at reasonable rates is booking early. Securing our location up to a year out serves two major purposes:

• Unbeatable Pricing: Value-priced gems disappear quickly. By booking far ahead, we’ve secured incredible homes in places like Kauai, the Cayman Islands, Mallorca, and Alaska for right around $200 a night—properties that often jump by $50 to $100 per night closer to the travel date.
  
  
• Making the Trip Real: Putting down a deposit makes the adventure feel tangible, which kicks off the exciting planning phase.
  
  

Safety Net: Almost all top-tier rental listings offer full refunds up to 30 to 60 days before check-in. You get the benefit of locked-in rates with zero risk if your plans change. (Tip: We also purchase standalone travel insurance a few months prior to departure for complete peace of mind.)

3. Smart Filtering: Vacation Rental Platforms

While platforms like Airbnb are popular options, we have had consistent success using VRBO. Many prime properties are cross-listed, but mastering a few search techniques makes all the difference:
