South Dakota GFP Commission Proposes Spring Light Goose, Spring Turkey and Custer State Park Turkey Seasons

PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission proposed the spring light goose conservation order at their August meeting. The dates for the conservation order will be set for the next three years.
•    Feb. 15 – May 4, 2016
•    Feb. 13 – May 2, 2017
•    Feb. 19 – May 8, 2018

The proposed change to the start date of the spring light goose conservation order would assure the conservation order begins the day after the regular dark goose season closes.

The spring light goose conservation order is a statewide season with no daily or possession limits.

The Commission also proposed the 2016 spring turkey hunting seasons. The proposals for the spring season dates include:

•    Archery: April 2 – May 22, 2016
•    Black Hills and prairie units:  April 9 – May 22, 2016
•    Split-season early prairie units: April 9 – April 30, 2016
•    Split-season late prairie units; Black Hills late season: May 1 – May 22, 2016
•    Access permits are valid: April 2-30, 2016
•    Custer State Park: April 9-May 22, 2015

For the spring turkey hunting season, hunters would have unlimited resident and nonresident one-tag male turkey licenses for the Black Hills and archery units, 5,654 resident and 218 nonresident one-tag male turkey licenses and 1,350 resident and 108 nonresident two-tag male turkey licenses for prairie units. These numbers are a reduction of 275 licenses compared to 2015. Additionally, the Commission proposed to create a new turkey hunting unit (16A) for Campbell and Walworth counties.

Five archery turkey hunting access permits would be available in Good Earth State Park and 10 access permits would be available for Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve.

The Custer State Park spring turkey hunting season proposal allows for 100 resident only one-tag male turkey licenses; which is a decrease of 35 from 2015.

The Commission will finalize this proposal at their Nov. 5-6, 2015, meeting at the Mitchell Ramada Inn. Written comments can be sent to wildinfo@state.sd.us.
